ICF Mourns Passing of Msgr. Bruce Dreier Reverend Monsignor Bruce A. Dreier died on August 10, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco, after an 8-month battle with cancer. He celebrated his 60th birthday just one week before his death. Msgr. Dreier served as Grand Chaplain of the Italian Catholic Federation from 1983 to 1993. He was very involved in the affairs of the Federation often traveling to branches and districts as well as serving on committees. He served as Associate Pastor at St. Elizabeth's in San Francisco and Chaplain of Sacred Heart and Cathedral High Schools. He was appointed as Director of Vocations and Seminarians for the Archdiocese and served as Secretary to the Priest Personnel Board. In 2000 he was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul II. He returned to parish ministry and served as Associate Pastor at St. Cecilia's Church and again at St. Elizabeth's Church before being named Pastor of the Church of the Epiphany. In 2004 he began his service at St. Robert's Church in San Bruno. Among his other duties, Msgr. Dreier also served as Chaplain of the San Francisco Fire Department and the San Bruno Police Department. Msgr. was an avid San Francisco Giants fan. He raised funds for the parish through Centerplate, the concessionaire at AT&T and Candlestick Parks. On any game day you could find him behind the Garlic Fries counter as chief cook, working alongside his parishioners. An overflow crowd attended the Vigil Service which was held on August 17, 2009, at St. Robert's Church. The funeral Mass was celebrated the next day at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, which was filled to near-capacity. The principal celebrant was the Most Reverend George Niederauer, Archbishop of San Francisco. Concelebrants included retired San Francisco Archbishop John Quinn, retired Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius Wang, Auxiliary Bishop William Justice, Salt Lake City Bishop John Wester, Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel Walsh and Reno Bishop Randolph Calvo, as well as more than 100 of his fellow priests. Msgr. Robert McElroy, his closest friend, delivered a very moving eulogy. We remember Msgr. Dreier with gratitude for his service and loyalty to the Federation. May he rest in peace.
