Magazines and Newspapers

Many readers have asked me if I read any Italian-American magazines or newspapers, and over the years, I have subscribed to a variety of magazines and newspapers about Italian and Italian-American culture, history, and cuisine. In this column, I thought it would be best to provide you with a description and the website of a number of magazines so that you can decide which magazine or paper you would enjoy.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. For an excellent list of over 50 Italian-American magazines and newspapers, see Leon J. Radomile's Heritage Italian American Style (available at bookstores or online).

Primo

The editors describe their magazine as " a publication for and about Italian Americans. Primo features in-depth articles on Italian American history, heritage, neighborhoods, accomplishments and current events. In every edition Primo features articles on travel, food, wine and reports on one or more of Italy's diverse regions. Primo features comprehensive guides that consists of well research information on topics of great interest and importance to Italian Americans. Primo features Italy's relationship with America and the impact that it has on the American culture."
Published every ten weeks, Primo is a glossy, high production magazine. Every issue contains a variety of interesting features, including articles on travel and hidden treasures, the Italian language, genealogy, book reviews, and wine. A recent issue published the following articles: "San Francisco Opera's New Musical Director Nicola Luisotti Signifies a Return to the Opera Company's Italian Roots," "A Touch of Italy in the Northwest: Italian Country Home & Kitchen," 0"Anti-Italianism in America: The Five Worst Acts of Persecution Against Italian Americans,"and "Mama D's in Bucks County: An Italian Family Restaurant."

L'Italo-Americano

Founded in 1908 by Gabriello Spini, L'Italo-Americano is published weekly. A bilingual paper, it features articles in both Italian and English, focusing on the news of interest to Italian-Americans on the west coast. However, it would be of interest to Italian-Americans throughout the country. Besides current news, it publishes regular articles on wine, history, sports, recipes, the personality of the month, and the Italian-American scene. It also publishes a book review.

Currently suspended, this magazine has remained a favorite of many of my friends and the publishers plan to return the magazine to newsstands soon. Readers can download a digital copy of the summer 2009 edition and order back issues online. Recent issues have included articles on "Emigration from Ustica," The Lauricellas tell the story of the island, (the earthquake, and their family; "The Dueling Italians," Then-and-now stories of Italians dueling (it out on the basketball court;" Assembly Bill 1863 Act Now," An interview with Assemblymember Anthony Portantino, author of AB1863; "Interview with the New Consul General," an interview with newly appointed Consul General Fabrizio Marcelli, including how to get dual citizenship.

Amici Journal

The editors describe their publication as "a celebration of what it means to be Italian-American, and it's also a celebration of culture and life -something we all can share. We are fascinated by Italy's cultural works, and are dedicated to elaborate and explore the history of Italian culture and art and the Italian-Americans who have impacted our community. Through the Journal, we will explore great Italian restaurants, highlight the artist and musicians who embody the romantic ideals of the Italian-American heart, feature businesses that impact the community, emphasis notable people and bring you news of interest. The Journal will also support the endeavors of all the Italian-American social and charitable clubs in the Chicagoland area, and will help promote these organizations, their efforts and the community in general."
Published 4 times a year, Amici Journal features a variety of articles of interest to Italian-Americans, particularly in the Chicago area. Recent issues contained articles on Pasquale Esposito, Gary Sinise, Tony Danza, Giorgia Fumanti, Rudy Giuliani, Lorraine Bracco, and Carla Gugino.

ITALICS

Italics is a video magazine, which one can watch online. On the magazine's website, one learns that "Italics: The Italian American Magazine is a monthly presentation in the CUNY Presents timeslot, which takes a regular look at activities of prominent Italian-Americans in various walks of life, including arts, business, government, and academia. Italics is now in its third decade serving the Italian-American community. Italics is hosted by Anthony Julian Tamburri, Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of Queens College/CUNY and Professor of Italian & Italian/American Studies."
Recent shows focused on The John D. Calandra Italian American Institute as they celebrated the Institute's 30th Anniversary, Geraldine Ferraro, Galileo, The Medici's and the Age of Astronomy exhibition, and Nancy Savoca, Maria Maggenti, and MaryLou Tibaldi-Bongiorno, all of whom we met at the recent New Italian American Cinema Festival.

La Cucina

La Cucina, a favorite of my wife, is a magazine devoted to Italian cuisine. It regularly features articles on food and wine.
The December 2009 issue features articles on how to:
Drink: An Italian take on 10 festive cocktails by two acclaimed New York mixologists.
Eat: Move over turkey, there's a new bird in town. Tiny quail makes a big impression at holiday time.
Give: Perfect presents for the gourmands in your life, from a simple horn handle corkscrew to a high tech gelato maker.
Explore: Discover the pleasures of Parma.
Celebrate: New Year's in Rome means lots of fireworks, fun, and food. Plus the Pope.

VOICES IN ITALIAN AMERICANA (VIA)

A literary and cultural magazine, VIA is "a semiannual literary and cultural review devoted to the dissemination of information concerning the contributions of and about Italian Americans to the cultural and art worlds of North America. Each issue [is] divided into three major sections: creative works, essays, and reviews."
The journal features nonfiction essays, fiction, poetry, Italian writing in the United States, and book reviews. Past issues of Voices in Italian Americana have been devoted to Pietro Di Donato, novelist and Jerre Mangione, novelist. In 1996, the journal focused on Italian/American women writers.
