Central Council Meeting - Feb. 9, 2008
St. Philip Neri Church Hall - Alameda, CA.
Fr. Daniel Cardelli led the opening prayer at 1:02 pm and GP Mike Rossi led the Salute to the Flag and the ICF Pledge. 23 CC members were present; Joseph Polselli was excused. GP Mike thanked the CC Emeritus members and guests for their attendance. The minutes from the October 20, 2007 Central Council meetings were approved as read.
Special Presentation – The Bertha Wright Society Crystal Heart was awarded to the ICF for the many years of generous support of Cooley’s Anemia. Dr. Vachinsky and Laurice Levine spoke.
Communications included appointment of Deacon Karl Welsbacher as District Chaplain for the Stockton District, an invitation from L’Italo Americano to 100th Anniversary Banquet on March 2, 2008, a letter from Oakland Children’s Hospital recognizing ICF as recipient of the Bertha Wright Society Crystal Heart Award and an invitation to a golf tournament sponsored by the Italian-American Community Services Agency on May 7, 2008 in San Francisco.
Reports
Grand President – Mike Rossi reported that nine Installations have been completed He thanked 1st VP Jim Jones, 2nd VP Jane Dianda, Grand Secretary Nina Malone. PGP Bob Aquistapace, CC member Jim Friebel and Life Member Emeritus Jody Balestieri for assisting with installations he was unable to attend. He thanked 1st VP Jim Jones and his committee for chairing the PGP Testimonial Dinner for Leonard Rossi. He also reported that he had attended several committee meetings and accepted Josephine Arieta’s resignation as Field Operations Director effective 11-30-07.
Grand Treasurer – Carmen Kilcullen reviewed the 2008 General Fund Budget. Overall, Carmen feels that the organization is in good shape financially.
Deputy Chairperson – Jim Jones reported that the January issue of "In Touch" was sent out with suggestions of topics for Branch Deputies to talk about at their meetings. Contact Jim if you would like to have an item printed in the newsletter. He is working with several branches to encourage new membership and avoid closure.
Committee Reports
Workshop – Dave Botta encouraged all districts to schedule a workshop with committee members Dave Botta, Bob Aquistapace, Carmen Kilcullen and Jane Dianda
Ways and Means – Leonard Rossi reported that 1933 calendars were sold to date. The theme for 2009 is Favorite Pasta Sauces. Convention raffle tickets are ready for pick up. The annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for July 24 in Monterey. BINGO will be held on Friday afternoon at the convention in Garden Grove.
Task Force – Richard Valli reported that the committee will be making recommendations at the June meeting regarding a 5-year plan. The committee made a motion that a CC member could also be an ICF employee while holding an office no higher than Grand Secretary. The motion was defeated.
Scholarship – Dante Galeazzi made a committee motion requesting $1,600 to fund the Italian Studies scholarships. The motion carried.
Public Relations – Nettie Descalso-Del Nero reported that the website is being updated. A meeting to review submissions for the ICF convention awards will be held May 9
Membership – Roselynne Jarrett made a committee motion requesting $1,225 for membership awards; the motion carried.
Hospitalization – Bob Basuino reported that 758 members are currently enrolled in the plan which has $950,831 in assets. The committee made a motion to spend up to $25,000 for an actuary and attorney to explore our options. The motion carried.
Heritage – Nina Malone reported that 65 branches have appointed a Heritage Chairperson. The committee would like to have a Heritage table at the next convention.
Gifts of Love – Ario Gregori reported that 34 awards were given totaling $16,800. He will provide clarification on the criteria for an award at the next CC meeing.
Finance – Carmen Kilcullen made a committee motion to change the name of "Reserve Fund" to "Charity Relief Fund"; motion carried. A revised budget was approved. George Bacigalupi explained how to complete the IRS Form 990-N that branches must complete by May 15.
Convention Directors – Dave Botta/Steve Fuentes Dave gave his final report on the Scottsdale convention; most branch fines for non-attendance have been paid. Steve Fuentes reported that the committee met in January. Members are reminded that reservations for the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Garden Grove MUST be received by July 29 to get the discounted ICF room rate.
By-Laws and Rituals – Richard Valli made a committee motion that allows branches that are fined for non-attendance at the convention, including those collected in 2007, to designate monies to an ICF charity of their choice; motion carried.
Apostolate/Charity – Maria Di Paolo presented the new Apostolate/Charity report form.
Unfinished Business
Expansion reports were given by Harry Pacini regarding a branch in Carson City, Nevada, by Dave Botta and Carmen Kilcullen regarding Arizona, Jim Friebel regarding Morgan Hill and Roselynne Jarrett regarding Moraga.
New Business - none
Action on Communications
A motion was made to send GP Mike and wife Marcie to L’Italo Americano 100th Anniversary Banquet in Universal City on March 2, 2008. Motion carried.
Good of the Order
Leonard expressed his thanks to Jim Jones and his committee and all who attended his Testimonial Dinner in November… an evening he and his family will never forget. GP Mike reported that Life Member Emeritus Larry Marsalli is recovering from surgery and Maria Di Paolo reported that PGP Madeleine Vinci is now in hospice care.
A closing prayer was led by Fr. Daniel Cardelli and the meeting was adjourned at 5:36pm. The next Central Council meeting will be held on June 14, 2008.
